The method of density measurement is based on the law of harmonic oscillation. A hollow U-shaped tube is electromagnetically forced into oscillation. The rate of oscillation is dependent upon the density of the sample in the tube. The density of the sample may be converted to specific gravity, % ethanol, or brix.
Also known simply as alcohol, or grain alcohol, ethanol is the primary alcohol found in wine. Ethanol is a critical constituent of wine and is produced from sugar during fermentation. The concentration of ethanol in wine can affect taste, microbial activity, the solubility of compounds, and tax rates. The ethanol by densitometry measurement is to be used exclusively for ethanol/water mixtures used in association with calibration of instruments such as the Foss Alcolyzer.
