The instrument consists of a reservoir of solvents, a pump, an injector, a separation column, and a detector. Separate components in the mixture pass through the column at different rates, allowing for the separation of different compounds. The pumps provide a steady high pressure, and can be programmed to vary the composition of the solvents during the course of the separation. Various methods of detection can be used for measuring UV-VIS absorption, fluorescence, or a change in refractive index.
