Microbiology at ETS
ETS Laboratories was founded in 1978 by Marjorie and Gordon Burns as a comprehensive analytical laboratory. Together their vision created the premier wine laboratory in the country. Over the years ETS has continued to expand its offerings. Our role is to provide the most advanced, reliable and efficient analytical tools possible. We have expanded our expertise in the development of advanced chemical and microbiological analyses. Our staff of dedicated scientists holds post-baccalaureate degrees in diverse fields, including aroma chemistry, microbiology and molecular biology. ETS has always offered an extensive range of techniques for microscopic examination, plating and characterization of cultured organisms. In addition, we are the leader in chemical analysis of wine spoilage. Our ISO accredited method for the detection and quantitation of 4-ethylphenol and 4-ethylguaiacol is a critical tool for monitoring the effects of Brettanomyces metabolism. Now moving into a new and exciting era As part of our ongoing commitment to innovation and excellence, we have recently expanded our analytical capabilities in microbiology. Our most recent development is genetic detection of spoilage microbes. These tools are based on advanced molecular biology techniques that identify specific yeast and bacteria. The result is accurate identification and quantification in two working days. Although genetic technology has been well established in the food processing and medical industries for many years, ETS is the first to adapt these techniques to the wine industry. We believe that this investment in technology will yield tremendous benefits to our winery clients by improving the speed and accuracy of their analytical information.
